# Are Wood Burning Tips Universal? Thread and Fit Chart by Pen Brand

**Short answer:** No. Wood burning tips are not universal: solid brass tips screw in on threads that differ by brand, and wire nibs fit only their own pen system. TRUArt is the only maker here that states a thread, M4 x 0.7, and it says its tips do not fit Walnut Hollow pens. For any other pen, buy tips whose listing names your model, or check the maker's own tip list.

This page is for someone about to order replacement tips or a bigger tip set and wanting to know if it will fit the pen on the desk. Fit depends on the kind of pen first. A solid-point pen takes threaded tips, a wire-nib burner takes wire tips held by its own pen, and the two never swap. Within each kind, fit is set by the maker. The chart below gives what each maker or listing states, and says so where nothing is published. No thread was measured for this page, and no size is guessed.

Read across from your pen. The third column is the maker's own statement, or the listing's, about thread or fit. Where it says not published, no thread size could be found on the maker's page, and the reliable route is the maker's own tip list for that model.

| Pen or tip set | Tip system | Thread or fit stated | What to buy |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool (solid) | Threaded points, screwed in with pliers | Thread size not published | Walnut Hollow points listed for this tool |
| Walnut Hollow Creative Woodburner (wire) | Nichrome wire points, changed with the tweezer tool | Its own wire points | Points sold for the Creative Woodburner |
| Weller 25 W woodburning kit (solid) | Tips changed cold with pliers, knife blade in a threaded chuck | Thread size not published | Tips whose listing names this Weller kit |
| TRUArt solid-point pens | Threaded brass tips | M4 x 0.7. Maker: does not fit Walnut Hollow | TRUArt tip sets |
| TRUArt Stage 2 (wire) | Wire tips, or tips bent from nichrome wire | Maker: tips do not fit other brands | TRUArt wire tips |
| Plaid Wood Burner (solid) | Interchangeable tips and stamps | Listing: fits Plaid tools. No thread stated | Plaid tip and stamp set |
| Razertip (wire) | Fixed-tip pens, or wire tips screwed into the BPH pen | BPH pen accepts all Razertip interchangeable tips | Razertip tips, or a complete pen |
| Colwood (wire) | Fixed tip (FT) handpieces or replaceable tips (RT) | RT tips need Colwood's Replaceable Tip Handle | Colwood FT or RT tips |
| Generic wire nib sets | Bent wire nibs | Listings name machine models or a wattage range | Only a set that names your machine |
| Generic solid tip sets | Threaded tips | Often no brand, model or thread named | Compare with your own tip before ordering |

Fit as stated on makers' pages and listings, checked October 2026. No thread was measured for this chart.

## Are wood burning tips interchangeable between solid-point pens?

Only when the threads match, and most makers do not say what their thread is. Solid tips are brass and screw into the end of the barrel. TRUArt publishes its size, **M4 x 0.7** (4 mm diameter, 0.7 mm pitch), and states that these tips do not match Walnut Hollow burners. Walnut Hollow and Weller publish no thread size at all. So a claim that a generic set fits a Walnut Hollow or Weller pen cannot be checked against a maker's figure.

Generic sets add to the problem. Several listings in the [tip set guide](https://burnandgrain.com/best/best-wood-burning-tips-set) name no brand, model or thread, and one includes three converters without explaining what they convert. Treat the words fits most pens as no information. A tip that starts to bind after a turn is the wrong thread: back it out instead of forcing it, since forcing can damage the thread in the barrel.

Note: Change solid tips only with the pen cold, using pliers, and take them out after each session so they do not seize. Dry graphite on the threads helps.

## Pyrography interchangeable tips on wire-nib burners

Wire burners come in two designs. Fixed-tip pens have the nib permanently attached, and you change the whole pen. Interchangeable systems keep one handle: Razertip's BPH pen clamps wire tips under stainless steel screws and accepts all Razertip interchangeable tips, and Colwood's replaceable tips sit on a bushing that pushes into its Replaceable Tip Handle. Colwood says both of its styles work with all its units and cords. Neither maker says its tips fit another brand's pen.

Whole pens are a different matter. Wire pens connect to the power unit by a plug, and Razertip sells adapters and cords for crossing brands: one adapts Razertip pens to Colwood, Nibs, Optima or Burn Master burners, another lets Colwood, Nibs and Optima pens run on a Razertip unit. So on wire burners the pen can sometimes move between brands by cord, while the tip stays with its own pen. Heat changes with the tip too: heavier tips run cooler and lighter tips hotter at the same dial number. Units are compared in the guide to [wire tip wood burners](https://burnandgrain.com/best/best-wire-tip-wood-burner).

## Wood burning tips for a soldering iron, including Weller

A solid-point wood burning pen is built like a soldering iron, and Weller's own booklet calls the tool in its 25 W woodburning kit a soldering iron. That does not make tips universal across soldering irons. Weller publishes no thread size for this kit, so a tip set fits it only if the listing names that model, and the same goes for any other iron.

The reverse question also comes up. The soldering point included in many wood burning kits is for joining metal with solder, not for marking wood. The differences between the two tools are set out in [wood burning tool vs soldering iron](https://burnandgrain.com/blog/wood-burning-tool-vs-soldering-iron).

## Walnut Hollow and Weller wood burning replacement tips

For Walnut Hollow, buy by tool name. The Creative Versa-Tool takes threaded points: universal, flow, mini flow, cone, tapered, calligraphy, shading, transfer, hot knife, hot stamps and soldering. The Creative Woodburner is a wire tool with its own points (drawing, universal shading, ball and rounded shading), changed with a tweezer tool. Points for one do not go on the other. With no thread published, the maker's own point list for your tool is the check.

For Weller, the kit page describes tips for burning, cutting, branding and embossing but gives no thread. Check Weller's own tip list for the kit model before ordering, and treat a third-party fit claim as the seller's statement, not the maker's. If the old tips are worn and not lost, see [do wood burning tips wear out](https://burnandgrain.com/blog/do-wood-burning-tips-wear-out) before replacing the set.

## What a wood burning universal tip is

Universal is also the name of a tip shape, which is where some of the confusion starts. Walnut Hollow's universal point is a flat wedge with a slanted edge, described by the maker as the point for all fundamental woodburning techniques: thin lines on the edge, wider bands when pulled sideways. The name says what the tip does, not what it fits. A universal tip from one brand still needs the right thread for another brand's pen. The [wood burning tip chart](https://burnandgrain.com/tools/wood-burning-tip-chart) shows the shape next to the other solid tips and wire nibs.

## How to check fit before buying wood burning tips

Five checks settle most cases before money is spent. They take a few minutes with the pen, its box or manual and the listing open side by side.

1. Find the exact model name on the pen, box or manual. Brand alone is not enough: 1 brand can sell both a solid pen and a wire burner.
2. Identify the system: a threaded brass tip that screws into the barrel, or a wire nib held by posts or screws. Buy only the same system.
3. Read the listing's fit line. It should name your model. A wattage range or the words standard pens is not a fit statement.
4. If a thread is stated, such as M4 x 0.7, compare it with what your pen's maker states. If your maker states none, check the maker's own tip list for the model.
5. When the tips arrive, thread 1 in by hand with the pen cold. It should turn freely. If it binds early, stop and return the set.

## Quick answers

Short answers to the fit questions people search. Each one repeats what a maker or listing states, since no tip was fitted for this page.

- **Are wood burning tips interchangeable?** Only within one maker's system, or where a listing names your pen model. Solid threaded tips and wire nibs never swap.
- **Do wood burning tips fit a Weller soldering iron?** Only tips sold for that Weller model. Weller publishes no thread size for its 25 W woodburning kit.
- **Which replacement tips fit a Walnut Hollow wood burner?** Walnut Hollow's own points for your tool. TRUArt states that its M4 x 0.7 tips do not fit Walnut Hollow.
- **Is a universal tip a tip that fits every pen?** No. It is a wedge shape for general line work. It still has to match the pen's thread.
- **Are pyrography interchangeable tips the same across wire burners?** No. Razertip and Colwood tips fit their own pens. Some whole pens cross brands with an adapter cord.
